The S&P 500 (Standard & Poor's 500) index consists of the stocks of 500 large companies traded on the stock exchanges in USA and operating in various business sectors including consumer products, information technology, financial services, health care, energy, industry, etc. The S&P 500 covers about 75% of the total market value of the stocks in USA and hence serves as a proxy for that entire stock market.

Investment in the S&P 500 can be done through Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) such as SPY or mutual funds such as Vanguard 500.
